Farm Profile: Ledge Ends Produce by Eleanor Freda
Published: January 28, 2009East Greenwich, RI - Ledge Ends Produce is located at the historic Briggs Boesch Farm in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. This property was purchased by the East Greenwich Land Trust in 2001 in an effort to preserve a treasured natural and historic resource.
The farmers of Ledge Ends Produce came to the Briggs-Boesch Farm in 2004 with a strong background in organic agriculture, ecology, and education.
When Erik Eacker graduated from high school, it was his dream to be farmer, and to farm with ecology in mind. When his parents bought a 170-acre farm in Northern New York in 1996, Erik had the opportunity to make his dream a reality. Although he had little previous experience, he operated Son E’ Acres Farm successfully as a certified organic farm from 1996 to 2003. Erik introduced many folks in this remote area of the state to organic food. Products from the farm were sold wholesale to supermarkets, as well as at farmers markets, co-ops, and through a community supported agriculture program.
After spending the summer of 1997 at Son E’ Acres Farm, Trisha Garland was hooked on farming. She continued to come back each summer, spending the rest of the year working on a Community, Regional, and Environmental Studies degree from Bard College in upstate New York. After receiving her degree in 1999, she spent a year working at the farm full-time before returning to college and becoming a high school science teacher, enabling her to share her appreciation of the natural world with a younger generation.
In 2004, Erik and Trish relocated to East Greenwich, Rhode Island to the beautiful Briggs Boesch Farm. Erik is the general manager of Ledge Ends Produce, which has grown to be one of the largest community supported agriculture farms in the state. Erik has served as a member of the Organic Advisory Committee and as former president of the Coastal Growers Market. He is currently serving as the President of Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA). His wife, Trish, is a high school science teacher and enjoys spending summers working on the farm.
Ledge Ends, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) certified farm grows vegetables and small fruit without the use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Their total capacity is 230 memberships; currently they have 80 available. Also available are partnership shares with Robin Hollow Farm (if you like flowers), Barden Orchards (if you need apples) and Narragansett Creamery (if you’re hankering for some local cheese).
In addition to their summer fruits and vegetables, Ledge Ends offers Micro Greens in the winter. These sprouts are available at the Providence Winter Market. In the spring the farm sells bedding plants, vegetable plants, herbs, and hanging baskets. An annual Plant Sale is held the weekend after Mothers Day.
Ledge Ends has local brown eggs for sale from their happy RI Red, Reds Star and Black Star chickens, all living in moveable coops and pasture raised.
The farm hosts several workshops for community and CSA members. You can learn to cook with their delicious produce, learn about science, and take a nature walk on the trails or through the fields with farm educators.
