Published: September 19, 2008Little Compton, RI - Young Family Farm, a labor of love.
The Young Family Farm began in 1997, when Tyler and Karla Young bought the 180 acre farm in beautiful Little Compton. Tyler’s grandfather originally farmed the land.
100 acres are devoted just to potatoes!
Karla and Tyler bought the farm in 1997 and grew just potatoes to sell wholesale at first. They soon added strawberries and put them out on top of an old spool, to sell by the quart. The quarts of strawberries would instantly sell out. So as the years went on, Karla and Tyler planted more strawberries and other items to grow and sell. They eventually built a more permanent stand and figured, “Let’s just do it all!” The farm is truly a labor of love; even their daughters and other family members help out throughout the year. The Farm Stand opened in May 2006 and they now also have 5 greenhouses including a full season one for winter squashes and potatoes. In addition to their thriving wholesale potato business, other seasonal crops such as sweet corn, butternut squash, fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and berries are produced for customers, which include area restaurants, catering companies and several public schools in Rhode Island.
While Farmer Tyler can be found in the fields digging and harvesting potatoes and such, Karla loves working in the greenhouse and talking with her customers. She is always looking for new items to carry at the stand. In addition to selling items that grow on their farm, such as potatoes, peaches and peppers; they also sell locally produced jams, jellies, maple syrup, honey and cheeses. At the Farm Stand, you will also enjoy annuals and perennials, as well as an abundant seasonal selection of fresh cut flowers such as oriental lilies, sunflowers, dahlias, and zinnias by the stem or by the bouquet. Karla thrives on finding and growing something unique. Creative floral arrangements are available for any event.
A pick your own apple orchard is a wonderful addition to the Farm Stand where families can enjoy a beautiful fall day picking fresh apples on the farm.
