A little about Baffoni's Poultry Farm
Baffoni’s Poultry Farm was started in 1935. Today, four generations of the family work on their 80 acre farm in Johnston, where they raise approximately 25,000 chickens and 1,200 turkeys. They raise leghorn and R.I. Red hens for egg production, and broad breasted cornish broilers and fryers.

The feed for their poultry is a wholesome diet that is regimented, consistent, and absolutely free of any antibiotics, hormones, or meat by-products of any kind. The farm-to-table mentality has driven the family to provide the finest and freshest quality cage-free poultry.

Currently, Baffoni's was awarded Rhode Island's first and only USDA certification for an on-site poultry slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse allows them to sell, quite literally, the freshest poultry possible without it ever being previously frozen.

Farm Profile: Baffoni's Poultry Farm by Angelica Sullam
Published: August 30, 2010

Johnston, RI - Baffoni’s Poultry Farm is an eighty-acre farm that was founded in 1935. It began as a very small poultry farm and slowly expanded over the years. In 1973 the farm entered the hands of the Baffoni brothers when the founder passed on. Each member attends to different tasks ranging from upkeep, gardening, running the store, processing, etc. Unfortunately, even though there is endless work to do on the farm, in order to make ends meet, most of them also have to work elsewhere. Although working two jobs is common among farmers, it strikes me as incredibly difficult considering there is so much to do on this farm. Not only does Baffoni’s Poultry Farm maintain a medium- sized vegetable garden, the farm also raises 25,000 chickens and 1,200 turkeys. They process all of the meat themselves, collect hundreds of eggs daily, and raise their own chicks. Everything is done on site, which is a tremendous amount of work for only eight employees total.

The amount of work is amplified by the family’s commitment to producing high quality products. They certainly value quality over quantity, which can also be seen in their processing plant. They only process 750 chickens a week in order to insure that their product is always top-notch. Given their quality, it is no wonder that they sell out of all of their products each day. Doing everything onsite also allows their products to remain well priced. Once you try Baffoni’s products, it is easy to understand why people drive out to Johnston, RI just for poultry; few products are comparable in quality and taste!

All of the animals are treated humanely, fed natural 100% vegetarian feed, and given ample space to roam around. All of the poultry are raised in cage free environments. The baby chicks start in large, warm barns. As they grow older, they are moved to larger spaces. The turkeys, which will be ready just in time for Thanksgiving, live on large, fenced-in platforms outdoors. There are 275 turkeys on each 1,500 square foot platform; this is plenty of room for them to move around. The chickens and laying hens have similar arrangements, and can also run around freely in large pens. These are indoors, however, to protect against inclement weather and predators. Both the laying hens and the broad-breasted Cornish broiler poultry have multiple large, screened windows in their pens so that plenty of light and fresh air are available. What’s notable about Baffoni’s Poultry Farm is how they manage to treat each animal individually even though there are a significant number of animals to attend to. They aim to produce the best quality poultry and do not jeopardize this for anything. Unlike many mega poultry operations across the country, these chickens and hens were so healthy that they could be exposed to humans without the worry of them getting sick, or about us getting sick for that matter. The Baffoni birds have remarkably good living conditions, especially considering how many birds are raised on the farm.

Don also revealed many hopes for the future of the farm. Soon, they want to create a larger store, with a kitchen and other products that complement the poultry. He wants to create a more convenient set-up for his customers; he aspires to have this ready for Thanksgiving so that Baffoni’s Poultry Farm is a one-stop-shop for his holiday-hosting customers. Don also recently received a grant to update their irrigation system, as well as to construct a green house that will allow the farm to expand what they sell in their farm store. Hungry yet? You can purchase Baffoni’s Poultry at a variety of local restaurants, at their farm stand, or at the following farmers’ markets: Barrington, Pawtucket/ Slater Mill, and Pawtucket Wintertime.
