Captain Elisha Steere Farm Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA) is the first CSA in Smithfield! As part of this program, you will be the first in our area to take part of this amazing concept that is spreading across the US. Through your membership, you will have access to fresh produce, grown locally, just for you. How Does it Work? For 13 weeks, beginning in August through November, simply come to the farm every Wednesday from 4-7 pm to pick up your share of produce sustainably grown in our fields. Due to the nature of our New England growing season, shares will be lighter in the spring and heavier in later months. We estimate that we'll have 6-10 different items each week, with plenty of old standbys and some delectable rarities. If you happen to be away for a week, please give us advanced notice and we will arrange to have that week's share donated to a local charity, or you can invite a friend or neighbor to pick it up. Founded in 2006, Four Friends CSA is a collaborative effort of several farmers who participate in the Southside Community Land Trust farming program at Urban Edge Farm in Cranston, RI. The collaboration farms-CSA is run by Christina Dedora, Liz Cantrell, and Chang & Ger Xiong & daughters. What is CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture, often shortened to CSA, is a prepaid subscription to a farm's produce for the season. Most CSAs give shareholders a weekly supply of veggies, herbs, fruits and sometimes even eggs and meat. You know it's fresh and you get to meet the farm and people who grew your food! The prepaid CSA arrangements also makes it a source of financial security for the farmer. Some CSAs also incorporate farm workdays for shareholders. Pickup days vary by farm and some offer pickups in Providence.CSAs have been very popular recently. Be sure to sign up early before subscriptions are filled!
